Accession Number: ILE1981.9.12 http://artgallery.yale.edu/pages/collection/permanent/pc_provenance.html Claim ResolutionResolution: Agreement reached, museum retained work Resolution Date: 2006 A claim was filed in 2003 on behalf of the estate of George Grosz for the recovery of Drinnen und Draussen (Inside and Outside) by George Grosz (1926). The painting had been on loan to the Yale University Art Gallery from the collection of Dr. Herbert and Mrs. Monika Schaefer, and on public view, since 1981. In consultation with the heirs of the Grosz estate, extensive research was conducted into the history of the painting which confirmed Dr. Schaefer’s legal ownership of it. Dr. Schaefer made the painting a promised gift to Yale in 2006. The heirs of the Grosz Estate were active participants in identifying this successful resolution of the claim. The painting was included in the Yale University Art Gallery’s special exhibition Art for Yale: Collecting for a New Century and published in the exhibition catalogue, and it is currently on view at the Gallery and posted in the provenance section of the Gallery’s website. |
