March 27, 1991, sold to private collection, New York, by Sotheby's, New York City, sale 6146, lot 160; thence gift to Dallas Museum of Art (accession date: April 26, 2010).

REASON FOR ACQUISITION AS AN EXCEPTION TO THE 1970 RULE: This work’s provenance is established to March 1991, when it was published in Sotheby's sale catalogue and sold at auction by Sotheby's on March 27. It has been exhibited at the DMA since 2002. It is one of only two lingams exhibited in the DMA’s galleries of south Asian art and thus significantly represents the common iconic representation of the major Hindu god Siva.
