Provenance Information

By 1994, private collection, New York, NY. Given by David T. Owsley to DMA (accession date: December 23, 2009).

REASON FOR ACQUISITION AS AN EXCEPTION TO THE 1970 RULE:
Provenance is clear to 1994. The sculpture has been exhibited at the DMA since 1995. The work provides potential for research to establish the identity of the figure it depicts (Although it may represent a dvarapala, many Khmer dvarapalas are standing figures, while this one is seated with one knee raised.) Its presence expands the DMA’s representation of Khmer art between the 9th and 12th centuries.

EXHIBITION HISTORY: Dallas Museum of Art, January 1995 through the present.
